GIVING BACK
Sometimes we hear about successful people and assume they got there because they
- were handed the keys to the kingdom
- got lucky, or
- have so much chutzpah that reaching the pinnacle of success was inevitable
The truth is many people fail their way to success. I call it getting a PhD from the University of Hard Knocks. But we usually don’t see people in that phase of their journey.
We see them living in nice houses, driving expensive cars, owning boats, airplanes, or yachts. While their lives may appear glamorous now, their journeys to get there likely weren’t.
My rise to the top has been full of challenges. I struggled with addiction and experienced my share of adversity and mishaps.
I was divorced, unemployed, and almost bankrupt. I’ve been scared, and the prospect of a brighter future seemed hopeless.
My journey hasn’t been easy, but I persevered. I’ve been sober for more than 2 decades and couldn’t have gotten where I am today without the help of a supportive community.
One of my guiding principles is,
“Give back that which was so freely given to me.”
During my lowest points, people stood by me, shared their stories, and showed me the way to a better life.
To show my gratitude, I devote much of my time to philanthropy. I have joined forces with the following organizations because they focus on fostering a better world for all human beings.
Whether it’s donating money, serving on a board, or sitting down with someone once a week and coaching them through a tough time, I believe that giving back is the best way to feel good about ourselves!
CORNERSTONE RECOVERY
Cornerstone to Recovery is a community organization that supports those impacted by addiction. I have an active role as a board member and as the fundraising committee chair for the future Women’s Recovery Centre.
YOUTH LINK
The YouthLink organization is near and dear to my heart. A former board member, I remain deeply committed to helping at-risk youth and their families gain access to support services that focus on their emotional and mental well-being.
YouthLink’s goal is to help youth develop strong coping mechanisms and life skills, and develop positive emotional well-being that will allow them to thrive.
BECAUSE IT TAKES A VILLAGE
During one of my many trips to rural South Africa, I witnessed the dire circumstances many South African children face.
Children raised in rural villages don’t qualify for kindergarten-level education, meaning they miss critical learning that would equip them for the first grade.
Woefully unprepared, these children drop out shortly after starting grade 1, which drives a cycle of poverty and crime. Something had to be done to ensure their ability to learn wasn’t hindered by their disadvantaged socioeconomic environment, so I founded Because It Takes a Village, a charitable organization committed to changing the future of following generations one village at a time.
When visiting the classrooms of our sponsored students, it dawns on me that the collective brainpower of these children could solve anything. And I am overcome with emotion as I wonder if the doctor who will cure cancer is in the room.
